Price Reductions of Internet Services in Afghanistan

The Ministry of Communications and IT (MCIT) has the pleasure to announce considerable reduction in the prices of internet services for the population of Afghanistan.

Most of the communication services including the internet services have been available via Satellite since 2005 and therefore, the cost of Internet was expensive, for instance the cost of one MB was around $4000. However, because of the recent development of the fiber optics network in Afghanistan, the price of one MB has been reduced to $1500.

Fortunately, the MCIT were able to connect the fiber optics network to other neighboring countries in 2011 and therefore, the MCIT have been able to further reduce the cost of internet services to $900 for one MB.

With the help of fiber optics network, the Afghan Telecom have been able to reduce the whole sale prices of internet services to ISPs and GSM companies operating in Afghanistan to $300 for one MB.

The overall bandwidth in the country that is provided by the fiber optics has been gradually increasing from 150 MB to 2400 MB since 2010 and it is anticipated that such bandwidth will be increased.

The MCIT aims to work continuously in order to increase the bandwidth for internet services and hence to further reduce the cost of internet services for the population of Afghanistan
